I don't know whether Jacob's sleep was fitful that night.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was far from sound. After all, he was running from his brother Esau, who wanted to kill him. And he had a stone for a pillow. So there's that.
But Jacob was distraught. He'd stolen the birthright from Esau. He broke up the family. He would likely never see his parents again. (In truth, he didn't.) And even in his messed up state, God blessed Jacob with a wonderful dream that would bless the Earth's inhabitants for generations to come.
It was a dream of a ladder.
I've written about this dream in a prior blog. Apparently it's really into my psyche, because I've revisited this particular bible story. This time, I've been inspired to write some lyrics. I call the "song" Canopy of Stars.
I’ve run away, yet still can’t hide
Can’t seem to leave my past behind.
And though I feel without a friend
I spend my night in search of Him
Under a canopy of stars.
In my mind I dream a dream
Of stars becoming living things
Which travel back and forth from God.
There are so many it would seem
They are a canopy of stars.
Every star before my eyes
Is there to help me realize
That I’m surrounded day and night
By special messengers of light
Who are my canopy of stars.
Twinkle twinkle little stars
I still wonder what you are
Could you be angels in flight?
Speedy messengers of light.
Twinkle angels from afar.
Bring us good news from afar.
