They said it wouldn't last. But here we are, partly because of 3 Cs.

Long ago and not so far away, I embarked on a journey with my best friend and soul mate. But the story line wasn't your dreamed-of "happy beginning" for an ever after story. More like a folktale that could fit right in with the Brothers Grimm collection.

  • In Rumpelstiltskin, pride precedes trouble, and greed exacerbates it.

  • Jealousy is at the root of Cinderella's predicament. And that of Snow White.

  • Hansel and Gretel experience neglect, abandonment, and betrayal.

But in the end, at least for most fairy tales, goodness prevails. And love wins.

A good marriage, like a good fairy tale, has some simple themes.

Compassion.

Want a happily ever after? Be kind. Give generously. Do to and for your partner what you want them to do to and for you. When in doubt, assume the best.

Courage.

You will have tough times. Bravely fight for each other and with each other - not against. Endure together. Cherish experiences that you have survived as a couple. Gather strength from past lessons learned. And dare to dream.

Commitment.

Be exclusive. Trust. Be open and honest. Make plans together -- for today, and 20 years from now.

About the time of our oldest son's wedding, we watched The Princess Bride. The young Buttercup and her incognito prince, Westley, endured serious conflict on their way to Happily Every After. I thoroughly enjoyed this modern fairy tale and appreciated the themes of compassion, courage, and commitment.

In true folk tale fashion, the story showed us that love grows stronger through suffering and true love is stronger than death.

I love a happy ending.
